Historical Background & Facilities
Pennington Elementary School opened in 1959 and has been meeting the needs of various elementary educational configurations since that time. Pennington is located in the center of a middle class diverse neighborhood in the Donelson area. We are ten miles from downtown Nashville. Currently, the school is comprised of a central building with several occupied portables, or "learning cottages". The main building houses 15 classrooms, guidance office, office area, library, cafeteria and kitchen. Our library was painted with murals in 2000 by one of our talented parents, Christy Elswick. Her art work is seen throughout the building. A newly completed physical education playroom opened in October 2003. In the spring of 2006, through the hard work of our TSS, donated computers, and money from our PTO, we were able to open a fully functional computer lab with 25 computers.
Community Involvement or Participation in School Activities
Pennington Elementary enjoys strong and involved parental support that consists of an active PTO and P.A.W. (Parents At Work for Pennington). We receive additional support from local business partners—Gaylord and Opryland Hotel, Hermitage O’Charley’s Restaurant, The Stones Rivers Women's Club, and Kroger’s. The local senior citizen group, FLIP (Friends Learning In Pairs), provides tutors for students needing extra help.
We have the YMCA Fun Company involved in a program for before and after school care of students here at Pennington.
